We love playsuits! They are practical garments for babies and children, keeping them warm where it matters most. They look adorable, and they are just as fun to knit. Smau is our striped version, with a clean and timeless look.
We wanted it to be fun and intuitive to knit – and we think it is! The entire playsuit is built step by step using full stripes rather than measurements. The straps, body, short rows, gusset and legs are all planned around the stripes, so there is very little measuring or adjusting along the way. Just one more stripe… and before you know it, the playsuit is finished!
The playsuit has a roomy fit while sitting neatly across the chest and back. The legs are shaped with different decrease intervals, creating a more anatomical fit around the diaper and along the legs than a simple straight decrease line.
It is worked seamlessly from the top down in stockinette stitch with stripes worked over 4 rounds. Short rows add extra room over the seat while creating wider stripes at the back, and the i-cord edging along the straps gives a clean and polished finish.
